ProfessorMegaman explains the explains this interesting illustration as such:
This year I came up with something interesting. I picked a theme comparing Master Higgins to Tom Tom (a.k.a. Wonder Boy, start of the self-same game that was spun-off into Adventure Island to circumvent the licensing agreement with SEGA).
Originally, one could say that Adventure Island was a simple clone of Wonder Boy, but as years rolled by the series held true to island-hopping platform action, while Wonder Boy took the path of the action RPG (Though, Super Adventure Island II does the same).
These two are as identical as can be, same weapon, rugged fashion sense, skateboarding skills, items from eggs, choice of locale, and their repetitive mission to save their lady loves from evil monsters…
… I doubt they’d get along.
I always wondered about that until I had done some Sega historical studies a few years ago in college during some down time. Despite being a very big Sega fan, I’ve never played Wonder Boy until recently, as an adult, and I still prefer Master Higgins to Tom Tom. Why? I played Adventure Island on Arcade as a 4-year-old and it was my first videogame. I played as Master Higgins 4 minutes before I played Mario. I was hooked on gaming then and subsequently hooked on Master Higgins and Mario as well. I’ve also played every Adventure Island game since, even the GameBoy games. Most of them have succumbed to the might of my thumbs except a small smattering. I didn’t even attempt to finish SA II, on the SNES, because it wasn’t a proper platformer being an RPG and all, I should probably get on that just to finish up the series.
Nothing like your first….

This week’s short film is all sprites and stop motion animation. It’s interesting to see the walking animations blown up. Link’s gait is goofy! That’s enough nerding out, ENJOY!
